One question I ask every female client is if they have their period regularly. For many of the adolescents I work with - those with eating disorders and those in sport - the answer is no. . Nearly everyone of them assured me that “it’s normal, their doctor told them most female athletes lose their period.” Well. It may be “normal” but that doesn’t make it good. Or healthy . It’s called amenorrhea and often a key indicator YOUR BODY isn’t getting enough food. Whether it’s because of restricting or an increase in exercise, either way it is a sign plain and clear that your body is nutritionally deficient. It’s your body’s cry for MORE FOOD! Loss of a period can lead to many complications including stress fractures and impacted fertility. . So, next time you hear someone brush off the fact that they don’t have their period as “normal” - say something!
